Obese people and smokers are risking their health


Obese people and those who smoke increasingly face being denied NHS surgery as hospitals cut costs, leading medics have said.

Their warning came as a North Yorkshire authority said that patients who had a body mass index of more than 30 will be denied surgery for non life-threatening conditions for up to a year.

The restriction, which will also apply to smokers, was described as the ‘most severe’ the modern NHS has seen by the Royal College of Surgeons. 

And NHS Providers, which represents NHS leaders, said: ‘Given that we are in the middle of the deepest financial squeeze in the NHS’s history, we are likely to see more decisions like this.
